Explanation

After Congress’s win in Telangana, Revanth Reddy has sworn in as Chief Minister of the state. This has been seen as a consolation prize for the Congress as the party lost Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh both of which were initially expected to have a Congress Government after the elections. Now, a video of TV anchor Sudhir Chaudhary is shared in social media along with claims that immediately after Congress’ win in Telangana, ‘Islamic Kalima’ is written on the Indian National Flag. Using this video, some have been appealing Hindus to be wary of Congress. You can view related posts with similar claims here, here, and here.

What’s the truth?

In the beginning of the clip, we can hear Sudhir Chaudhary saying, ‘This is Asaduddin Owaisi’s party’. Asaduddin Owaisi is the President of All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM). The party has neither aligned with Congress nor with INDIA alliance. In Telangana, it contested alone in 9 seats winning 7 of them.

As we looked at the clip closer, we saw the “Zee News” logo in the upper right corner. In addition to Zee News’s logo, the viral video also stars news anchor Sudhir Chaudhary. This indicates that the video is outdated because Sudhir Chaudhary, who is currently an anchor for Aaj Tak, left Zee News more than a year ago.

Using a keyword search, we found a video from India Today on YouTube which was reported on 10 June 2022. The video was a news report about India’s tricolour flag being defaced in a protest in Telangana by a mob.

Using this, we narrowed our search to the keywords “DNA Sudhir Chaudhary June 10” on YouTube, we found the full video on Zee News’ YouTube channel. The portion shared in the viral clip can be seen from the 34th minute of the video. See below.

The incident was reported on the Times of India as well. In a protest against Nupur Sharma’s comments on Islam’s Prophet Mohammed, a mob of Muslims carried a flag which replaced the Ashoka Chakra in the National Flag with an ‘Islamic Kalima’. This incident took place in Mahabubnagar of Telangana on 10th June 2022. It was covered by Times Now, First Post, Economic Times and Deccan Chronicle as well.

Hence, this clarifies that the incident did not happen after Congress’ win in Telangana in 2023 Assembly Elections. This took place in 2022 when Bharat Rashtra Samiti (then Telangana Rashtra Samiti) was in power in the state with its leader K.Chandrashekar Rao as the Chief Minister.

Earlier in 2023, similar false narratives were spread after Congress’ win in Karnataka as well. Some of them are listed below.

Conclusion

The widely circulated claims that an Islamic phrase (Kalima) was written on the Indian flag as soon as the Congress won Telangana are untrue. The video is actually from 2022 when the state was governed by the BRS with K. Chandrashekhar Rao as the Chief Minister.
