Explanation

The 1 minute and 30 second video shows an ariel view of Kerala’s beautiful curvy hill roads. This video was posted by the official X handle of CPI(M) Kerala on March 25 accompanied by the caption “The 1251 km long mountain highway from Nandarapadav, Kasargod to Parassala, Thiruvananthapuram will come up at Rs 3500 crores.” Some social media users shared this post with a claim stating, “Left promoting Modi Govt infra work.” One such claim post can be read here.

What’s the truth?

Our investigation began with a pertinent keyword search that directed us to a tweet from Congress Kerala’s official account.

According to their post, they have clarified by stating, “CPI(M) and BJP trying to take credit for a project fully funded by Kerala State, which was one of many infrastructure projects initiated by Late Sri. Oomen Chandy.”

Also, they further added, that the first phase of construction between 59km Cherupuzha to Vallithode began in 2015 at 237 Cr. It was completed in 2017-18 and it changed the landscape and the local economy of the hilly areas of Kannur district which was previously not connected well.

We took this as a cue and searched further which led us to an article by The Hindu. The report is titled “KIIFB funds for hill, coastal highways.” According to the article, the proposed 1,919.4-km Hill Highway and Coastal Highway from the north to the south of the State will be built with funding from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB). The Coastal Highway is expected to cost ₹7,000 crore, while the Hill Highway is estimated to cost ₹5,000 crore.

For more information, we looked further at the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board’s (KIIFB) official website. We discovered a newsletter released in August 2023 that contains information on the project’s status.

The Indian Express has also covered an article about Kerala’s hill highway and coastal highway projects exclusively can be read here.

All of the above data exemplifies that the Kerala infrastructure project was not carried out by the BJP, despite what the widely circulated rumor suggests.

Conclusion:

We, therefore, conclude that the widely circulated rumor that leftists are claiming credit for Modi’s government infrastructure is wholly untrue and inaccurate. The project is funded by the state infrastructure investment board or KIIFB, and the idea was conceptualized during the UDF government led by the late Oommen Chandy when in alliance with Congress party.
