It has been 5 days since the start of the Israel-Hamas war and social media is flooded with multiple visuals linking it to the ongoing war. Some of the posts carrying photo with similar claims can be seen here, here and here.
What is the truth?
When searching with relevant keywords we found that the photo is not recent but from 2014. Moreover, Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s youngest son Avner Netanyahu started his military service in 2014 and is not recent news.
A Facebook post by ‘I Stand in support of Israel’ dated 2, December 2014 is found carrying the viral image with a long caption that mentions that Avner Netanyahu has started military service in the Israel Defence Forces (IDF).
With further search, we found the Times of Israel reporting that Avner Netanyahu, the youngest son of Israel’s Prime Minister, began his military service in the Israel Defense Forces. This report dated 1, December 2014 mentions that the photo is of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife Sara, seen with their son Avner, at the Jerusalem’s Ammunition Hill.
Another Times of Israel article dated 30, December 2014 reported that Avner Netanyahu was lightly injured during IDF training. The article features a photo taken on 1, December 2014 with the caption “Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife Sara, seen with their son Avner (C) as he prepares to begin his IDF service”.
This proves that an old photo from 2014 when Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s son Anver Netanyahu was preparing to begin his IDF service is falsely shared as recent relating it to the ongoing war.
