Explanation

The final match of the 16th season of the IPL was scheduled to take place yesterday between Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The highly anticipated match among cricket fans has been postponed to today (May 29) due to heavy rain.

Meanwhile, an image showing a massive crowd wearing yellow coloured t-shirts is viral with the claim that they are Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fans at a whole new level at Ahmedabad. Some of the posts with such a claim can be seen here and here. Twitter users are also sharing another image with the same caption.

What is the truth?

When reverse-searching the viral image we found that the image is old and unrelated to Chennai Super Kings or Cricket by any means.

A tweet dated November 2017 is found carrying the viral image with the caption “The Great Ethiopian Run – 2017 – Addis Ababa, #Ethiopia! Beautiful Scenes!”.

The same image is also found on the MDG Fund website with the caption – Haile Gebreselassie kicks off the Great Ethiopian Run under the slogan “We Can End Poverty by 2015”.

Another image circulated with the same claim is found tweeted by EFE Deportes on  27, May 2023 with the caption in Spanish roughly translated as “#EFEfotos | 🔥 Push towards First Division. Thousands of fans have welcomed UD Las Palmas outside the Gran Canaria stadium.”

Conclusion

It is found that the viral photos showing a massive crowd wearing yellow coloured t-shirts are not CSK supporters in Ahmedabad but one of the photos is from The Great Ethiopian Run and is at least on the internet since 2017 and the other photo is of fans welcoming UD Las Palmas outside the Gran Canaria stadium.
