The one-minute and eighteen-second video shows a black sedan car repeatedly striking a man as it drives backward. Every time, the man gets to his feet, kicks the car, and confronts the driver. In addition, we witness the man attempting to enter a second red sedan car, but the black car keeps hitting it. Users who share the video claim that this incident occurred in Delhi. One such claim can be seen here.
What’s the truth?
Using some keyframes from the viral video, we performed a reverse image search on Google and discovered multiple Facebook posts from December 2022 with captions in Spanish. According to the captions of these posts, the incident happened in front of a McDonald’s in Tecnológico Toluca, Mexico. One post is titled in Spanish, roughly translated to English, “My God Accident on Crisa Bridge, Tecnológico Toluca Avenue in front of Mc Donald around 9 pm Saturday, December 3rd.” You can view all the posts here, here, and here.
Also, we geolocated the exact street view with the help of Google Maps for the reader’s reference.
We have also attached a comparison image of the Google Street View and the viral video screengrab for the reader’s reference.
When we advanced our search, we found a tweet by the “Secretary of Security of the State of Mexico” stating that those possibly involved were arrested for their probable relationship in the crimes of damage to property and injuries. The X post was dated December 4, 2022.
Our further search led us to an article published by a Spanish-based news outlet, El Mana.com which also carried the screengrab of the viral video. The report is titled “They hit the driver several times, but he gets back up to continue fighting” and was published on December 4, 2022. According to the article, “A user who captured the fight with her cell phone spoke during the video transmission and mentioned the location of the fight, locating the attack on Avenida Independencia, passing Calle Tecnológico in the municipality of Metepec, State of Mexico.”
The report went on to add, “A driver was hit several times during a traffic argument in the State of Mexico. The violent situation was recorded by several people who witnessed the accident.”
All the above information confirms that the road rage incident happened in Mexico and not in Delhi, India.
Thus, we conclude that the viral claim stating that the road rage incident took place in Delhi is false. In reality, it’s an old 2022 video from Mexico.
