Explanation

An image showing a person wearing an Islamic cap watching a house being bulldozed is shared to claim that a helpless Muslim man in Haryana’s Nuh is watching his home being demolished by the government. Some of the posts with such a claim can be seen here and here.

What is the truth?

When reverse-searching the viral image we found that the image is old and is unrelated to the Haryana demolition drive. Scroll article dated 13, April 2022 is found featuring the viral image mentioning that a house in Khargone is being demolished.

The article further mentions that houses and shops of Muslims who were allegedly involved in violence during the Ram Navami procession that was held in April 2022 were demolished. Some of the occupants of these houses allegedly participated in violence and the demolition is portrayed as a collective punishment. However, legally the houses have been razed for unauthorized construction and not for allegedly participating in riots.

Free Press Journal reported that the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan warned rioters of the strictest action and the illegal constructions of stone pelters were demolished in Bhopal’s Khargone.

The Hindu reported about the Haryana demolition drive on 11, August 2023 that the government had earlier claimed that it was demolishing “illegally-constructed” buildings following communal violence. The Haryana government on Friday asserted in the Punjab and Haryana High Court that the demolition drive in Muslim-dominated areas in Nuh district was not a case of “ethnic cleansing” and that due procedure, according to the law, was followed, the article further reported.
