Manipur is witnessing massive clashes and violence since May 2023. A video of two Kuki women paraded naked by a group of Meitei men and sexually assaulted by them in May has surfaced yesterday after 2 months and has created an outrage across the country. The Supreme Court has directed the Union and BJP-led State government to take steps against the video. Multiple misinformation and disinformation are being spread relating to the Manipur issue.

A Congress supporter shared a 9-second video clip of an armed man opening fire in the air with the caption translated as “BJP supporter extremists practicing the killer. Modi ji, from where these extremists are getting deadly killers like 100-round fully automatic gun”, with hashtags including Manipur, Manipur Violence and Manipur Burning.
The post in Hindi reads as “#मणिपुर भाजपा समर्थक उग्रवादी हत्यार चलाने का अभ्यास करते हुए| मोदीजी इन उग्रवादियो केपास 100-Round fully Automatic Gun जैसे घातक हत्यार कहाँ से आ रहे है“. This post has gained 218k views, and around 2k retweets and likes as of this writing.
What is the truth?
When reverse-searching the keyframes of the video clip we found that the video is old and is not related to the Manipur incident. The viral video clip is found posted on the Reddit website on 8, August 2022 with the caption ‘Fully automatic Glock: 100 rounds’.
The same video was also found posted on the Facebook page ‘IDIBI Firearms’ in October 2022.
We could not ascertain the whereabouts of this video but could confirm that the video has nothing to do with the Manipur issue. Manipur violence started in May 2023 wherein the viral video is doing its rounds on the internet at least since August 2022, way before the riots in Manipur.
However, more than 3,000 weapons have been looted by the public during the recent spate of violence in Manipur. And, they are being used by civilians to ‘protect’ or to launch an assault against the opposite community, reported The Wire. The Chief Minister Biren Singh has appealed to people to surrender the arms looted from police armouries.
