Explanation

Three powerful devastating earthquakes left thousands dead in Turkey and Syria on 6, February 2023. Turkey’s President Erdogan announced a 3-months emergency across the affected provinces. Several videos are being shared on social media platforms as the recent earthquake. News reports and social media users have posted a few videos of buildings collapsing completely. But not all we see on social media pages are real. A few of the videos and images were old and unrelated. Some of the posts carrying such videos and images claiming they were from a recent earthquake in Turkey or Syria can be seen here, here, here, here, and here.

What is the truth?

The keyframes of the viral videos are reverse searched and the images are searched with Google lens to find if they belong to the recent disaster in Turkey or Syria. And the search also included keyword search when needed.

Claim – 1 FactCheck

The first video was found uploaded by the ABC7 YouTube channel on 25, June 2021 with the title ‘Video shows moment of condo building collapse in Surfside, Florida’. The description part reads “Security camera video from an adjacent building captured the moment of a beachfront condo building collapsed in Surfside, a town outside Miami.”

Claim – 2 FactCheck

This viral video was found uploaded on the ANN news CH YouTube channel on 17, April 2016. The description part is translated as “In Tama City, Tokyo, the scaffolding of a building being demolished collapsed as strong winds blew due to the low pressure. At around 10:30 am on the 17th, the metal scaffolding of a nine-story building under demolition in Sekido, Tama City collapsed due to strong winds”.

Claim – 3 FactCheck

This viral video is found published on a Turkey website T24 on 23, November 2022 mentioning it as the moment of a citizen jumping from the 3rd floor in the Düzce earthquake.

Claim – 4 FactCheck

The post with this video was reviewed by Twitter and a tweet by a user Rosy is mentioned in the review to convey that the video is old. The video is tweeted in October 2020 as CCTV footage of an earthquake in Izmir, Turkey.

This image was found on the iStock photo website mentioning that it was uploaded in January 2019.

Claim – 6 FactCheck

The matching visual from this viral video is found in August 2020 dated article on the sofrep website. The image is said to be from the Beirut explosion in Lebanon.

This viral video is found tweeted by a Twitter user Enes FREEDOM in October 2020 mentioning it as the earthquake in Turkey and Greece.
