Explanation
On 17th September 2022, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated his 73rd birthday by releasing 8 cheetahs into the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. The cheetahs were brought from Namibia in a special plane after a lengthy legal struggle that lasted almost a decade. Mirror Now tweeted a video of a cheetah claiming that it was the first glimpse of the cheetah that has been brought from Namibia.
What’s the truth?
When we took the keyframes of the video which is 15 seconds long and reverse searched them to find the origins of the video, we found a thread on ‘reddit.com’ which had the same video. The video on ‘reddit.com’ is 59 seconds long and it was uploaded to the platform on 26th November 2021.
The video appears to be taken from a TikTok app and the video has a visible water mark labelling @wildcatsanctuary. In the longer video, we can see that there are actually two cheetahs and the video is titled “A bond between two brothers, Kitu and Lavani.” We searched for Kitu and Lavani online and found that they are in the ‘Wild Cat Sanctuary’ in Sandstone, Minnesota.
This old video from Sandstone, Minnesota is now being shared by Mirror Now and some other news outlets that they are the Cheetahs that India got from Namibia.
Conclusion
Old video of 2 cheetahs from a sanctuary in the USA is being shared by various news outlets with a claim that the video is showing one of the cheetahs that India got from Namibia. The claim is totally false as this is an old video.
