#Manipur has gone out of control of Modi & Shah. Videos have come to light where armed civilians are torturing and ultimately shooting to death a kukki Christian young girl. Manipur is on fire & Modi is silent. The girl was then shot in the head in cold blood, the part of the video not shared. #ManipurBurning #NewIndia #manipurriots
A video showing a group of armed men torturing a woman and later shooting her to death in mid of a road is widely circulated with the claim that the video is from Manipur. The viral posts mention the woman as a Kuki Christian girl and that she was shot dead by armed civilians. An Assamese newspaper, Amar Asom based in Guwahati published a news snippet on its paper along with an image from the viral video mentioning that the girl was shot dead in Manipur.
Some of the posts with such a claim can be seen here and here.
What is the truth?
When searching with relevant keywords we found that the video is not from Manipur.

A tweet by Utpal Parashar, Senior Assistant Editor at Hindustan Times (as mentioned in his Twitter bio), posted the news snippet from Amar Asom along with a couple of old news article screenshots related to the same incident with the caption “Today’s Amar Asom uses a six-month-old photo from a video of a woman killed on the road in Myanmar and carries a news report claiming the incident happened in Manipur.”
With further search, we found the articles dated December 2022 quoted as sources in the above tweet. The articles are from Irrawaddy and Mizzima websites reporting that a woman accused of being a junta informant and a pro-regime Pyu Saw Htee militia member is shown being beaten and shot dead on a road by a number of armed people. The woman is identified as Aye Mar Tun, age 24, a teacher. She was said to be killed in June for giving information to the junta that led to the arrest and killing of local PDF members.
The CNI Myanmar reported that the National Unity Government (NUG) statement said, “As the incident is completely unacceptable under military ethics and rules, an investigation will be launched into the incident and action will be taken effectively against whoever involved in it”, vowing to investigate the murder of a woman in a street in Tamu in Sagaing Region and take action against those who committed the crime.
An article on the Ludunwayoo website reported that Minister U Aung Myo Min also said that not only will the investigation be completed, but appropriate actions must be taken.
It is found that a 2022 video from Myanmar is shared to falsely claim that a young Kuki girl was killed by armed civilians in Manipur.
