A video of a clash between political leaders during a meeting that ended up with one of them beating the other with his footwear is being circulated with different claims. One of the social media users claims that the video was recorded after the first list of candidates of Congress.

And another user shared the same video with the caption “Is it true that BJP leaders are beating each other in Rajasthan after ticket distribution?” Some of the posts with similar claims can be viewed here and here.

What is the truth?

When searching with relevant keywords we found that the video is not of Congress leaders or BJP leaders in Rajasthan. The video is of a clash between BJP MP and MLA in Uttar Pradesh in 2019. Hindustan Times uploaded the visuals from the same incident in March 2019 with the title “Watch: BJP MLA, MP thrash each other with shoes, slaps during a meeting in UP”.

The description part reads “BJP Lok Sabha MP from Sant Kabir Nagar Sharad Tripathi and party MLA from Mehdawal Rakesh Singh Baghel engaged in a fight during an official meeting in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday. The video has gone viral on social media where Tripathi can be seen hitting Baghel with his shoe. The argument broke over the placement of names on a foundation stone of a project. Baghel hit back landing a few punches at the Lok Sabha MP before security personnel intervened and separated the two”.

News 18 covered the incident in March 2019 mentioning that the fight took place at a district committee meeting in the presence of the minister in charge of the district, Ashutosh Tandon. The BJP MP Sharad Tripathi lost his cool at MLA Rakesh Singh because his name was missing from the foundation stone for a local road.
