What is the truth?
When reverse searching the keyframes of the viral video, an article in the Economic Times published on June 18, 2022, is found carrying the video. In the video, Karnataka State Congress President DK Shivakumar is seen tearing up the Karnataka textbooks demanding the withdrawal of the revised textbooks.
With further search, the Times of India article is found publishing a news story on June 08, 2022, about him meeting the press before announcing the protest. It is mentioned that Congress reiterated its demand that the government should withdraw school textbooks that were revised by the Rohith Chakrathirtha Committer and that the party will not stop the protest till then. “These revised textbooks, which have distorted and false information about noted personalities including Kuvempu, Bhagat Singh and BR Ambedkar, deserve to be thrown into the dustbin,” Shivakumar said.
Times Now also reported the same news on 18, June 2022. This article is found carrying the video of Shivakumar tearing the textbooks.
Similarly, in a revised class 8th Kannada-II textbook, in a chapter titled ‘Kalavannu Ketavaru’ (Those Who Defeated Time), a paragraph reads, “There was not even a key hole in the cell where Savarkar was incarcerated. But, bulbul birds used to visit the room and Savarkar used to sit on their wings and fly out and visit the motherland every day”. The Karnataka Textbook Society (KTBS) has received many oral complaints about this controversial paragraph.
