Explanation

Top national politicians from the India bloc highly criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for using national agencies like the CBI, IT Department, or ED against the sitting chief ministers Arvind Kejriwal and Hemant Soren. The Maharally was held at Ramlila Maidan, Delhi. The Maharally was attended by Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Sunita Kejriwal, Kalpana Soren, Priyanka Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, and Thol Thirumavalavan. This maharally was about ‘Loktantra Bachao’ meaning save the democracy, and during this rally, the Indi block demanded the immediate release of both the Delhi and Jharkhand chief ministers.

Meanwhile, a few images are purporting in X (previously Twitter) that shows a massive crowd of people standing, and if we literally focus and see the image, we can see a huge number of people gathered at that place. This was posted on X, and this account user claimed that it’s a massive crowd gathering at the India Alliance rally at the Ramlila Maidan. The post further stated that Godi Media(Government supporting channel) won’t show you these visuals.

Additionally, we also saw a similar image of a massive crowd gathering that was widely shared. In this image, we can see a massive crowd gathered at a curved, wide road, and the majority of people are wearing yellow dresses. Sharing this image, the X user who shared it claimed that the surrounding area of Ramlila Maidan.

The same images with claims widely shared on X can be seen here, here, here, and here

What’s the Truth?

We ran a reverse search and found that both the viral images are from different events.

FactCheck – Claim 1

While searching for the first viral aerial image of a massive crowd, we found the same image in the article published by Peoples Democracy with the title “West Bengal: Brigade turns into the Red Sea,” and in the article it’s mentioned that the five left parties general secretaries and CPI (M) state leader addressed the massive rally.

Taking this clue, we further searched, and we found the same was posted by CPI (M) West Bengal on X on 10, June 2020. This image from 2020 is being shared with false claims.

FactCheck – Claim 2

The second viral image of the massive crowd with the most people wearing yellow dresses is actually from Ethiopia, and the description states that “Haile Gebreselassie kicks off the Great Ethiopian Run under the slogan – We Can End Poverty by 2015.” This actual image was published on the Millennium Development Goals Achievement Fund’s (MDGFund) website.

The same image was also published in a CNN article, with the image and description, “the annual Great Ethiopian Run in Addis Ababa is popular among tourists. courtesy Ethiopia Tourism”

We deduce that the image’s location has been identified as Ethiopia on websites, including reliable news articles.

According to the above-mentioned proofs, both the viral images are from different events and were falsely shared as part of the recent India Alliance Maha rally that was held in Ramlila Maidan, Delhi.

Conclusion

Both the viral images are not from the India Alliance Maha Rally, but they’re actually from different events: one from Kolkata and another from Ethiopia.
