Explanation
The traditional Islamic skull cap commonly known as Taqiyah is worn by Muslims for religious purposes and during daily prayers. It is mostly white in color.
A photo of Prime Minister Modi wearing a traditional Islamic cap is going viral on social media with the claim that he is wearing a skull cup in Egypt but refused to wear it in India when offered. This photo is extremely viral on Facebook. Another photo to quote that he refused the skull cap is also being shared on Twitter.
What is the truth?
When reverse searching the viral photo it was found that the people in the circulating photo were featured in an article published by an Islamic website The Dawoodi Bohras on 11, February 2023.
The article titled “Prime Minister Narendra Modi Inaugurates the Dawoodi Bohra community’s Arabic Academy in Mumbai” mentions that Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new campus of Aljamea-tus-Saifiyah Arabic Academy in Mumbai on February 10, 2023. The photos of Modi featured in this article show that he did not wear a skull cap.
The Hindu article reported, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Mumbai on February 10, weeks after his last visit on January 19, for the inauguration of the Dawoodi Bohra community’s Arabic Academy in Andheri East. Mr. Modi will share the dais with Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, the 53rd al-Dai al-Mutlaq and the present leader of the worldwide Dawoodi Bohra community, during the ceremony, a senior member of the community said.”
Narendra Modi’s tweet dated 10, February 2023 is found featuring a set of images including the original version of the viral image with the caption “Delighted to join the programme to mark the inauguration of the new campus of @jamea_saifiyah in Mumbai.”
It is found that one of the photos of Modi taken during the inauguration of the Dawoodi Bohra community’s Arabic Academy in Andheri East is photoshopped and is being shared.
The second image is found posted in an NDTV article dated September 2011 mentioning that Modi refused to wear a skull cap offered by a Muslim cleric when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat.
