Explanation

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is a medical entrance examination in India for students aspiring to pursue undergraduate medical (MBBS), dental (BDS), and other healthcare courses.

It was introduced to standardize the admissions process and ensure merit-based selection. However, NEET has faced controversy, including concerns about its impact on students from rural areas and state boards, disparities in coaching access, and allegations of question paper leaks and malpractice. Proponents argue to ensures a uniform standard for medical education, while opponents highlight issues of equity and fairness.

The NEET 2024 examination faced controversy due to a scandal involving the leakage of the question paper. In Bihar, four candidates confessed to obtaining the leaked paper one day before the May 5 exam, reportedly paying as much as Rs 32 lakh for access. The leak was orchestrated by Sikandar Prasad Yadavendu, who distributed the paper to his nephew and others through accomplices. This incident sparked widespread protests and political allegations.

Meanwhile, a newspaper cutting of a Malayalam newspaper is purporting in X (formerly Twitter), and we can see the student‘s obtained marks and names beside their photo. This newspaper cutting is widely shared and claims that these are NEET entrance question paper leak beneficiaries. The post further asks to look at the image and guess who and which religion they belong to mentioning all are from one Muslim community.

The same viral newspaper cutting post was shared as Pariksha Jihad (Examination Jihad) by right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supporter and Sudarshan News TV Editor in Chief Suresh Chavhanke (Archive Link).

The same was widely shared by the right-wing supporters and can be seen here, here, here, here, and here

What’s the truth?

We ran a reverse image search, but we couldn’t find solid results. Further search led us to the Universal Institute’s Instagram handle, but again, we couldn’t find anything.

Additionally, we ran a keyword search and found the original advertisement posted in the e-paper of Malayalam newspaper Mathrubhumi, and we translated the newspaper advertisement headline, which states “Universal Institute, Kottakkal, makes waves in Kerala on silver jubilee day for NEET RESULT 2024.”

According to this, we find out that this is the toppers list of the coaching institute, Universal Institute Kottakkal, Kerala.

Furthermore, YouTurn reached out to the Institute’s principal, Mr. Hameed, who told us that this viral post about newspaper cutting is false and misleading. He added, “these are the top list of students from the institute’s NEET Exam 2024 and not the paper leak beneficiary, and our institute has all community students, not only from the Muslim community but also from the Hindu, Christian, and many other communities as well.”

We deduce that the viral post showing a newspaper cutting of Universal Institute, Kottakkal NEET 2024 toppers list is falsely shared as NEET question paper leak beneficiaries.

Conclusion

The viral post about newspaper cutting is false and misleading; in fact, it is of the institute’s NEET toppers list.
