Explanation

A video clip of a massive crowd purportedly raising slogans and protesting is shared with the claim that it is the latest video of the crowd of Imran Khan’s supporters in Islamabad. The post also mentions “Never before has such an atmosphere been created against Pakistan’s army. These Jihadis will die fighting among themselves”.

What is the truth?

When reverse-searching the keyframes of the viral video we found that the video is not related to Pakistan but from a recent protest in Mexico against electoral reforms.

When reverse searching the keyframe that has the shop names ‘Bizzarro’ and ‘Men’s Fashion’, a Trip Advisor webpage carrying a similar image is found with the caption ‘Entrance on Avenida 16 de Septiembre 82’.

When searching with the above-yielded result, we found that the video was captured from Mexico and not Pakistan. The exterior of the above-mentioned building ‘Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico’ is found matching the visuals from the viral video. This is found using Google Maps.

With further search, a BBC news article dated 27, February 2023 is found reporting about the huge crowds rallying against electoral reforms in Mexico. Huge rallies were held in Mexican cities against the government’s attempts to undermine the electoral authorities. The biggest rally with 5,00,000 people was in Mexico city as per the organizers and 90,000 as per the local government, reported BBC. This article mentioned the location as Mexico City’s historic Zocalo Square. But this article does not carry any matching visuals from the viral video.

A Deutsche Welle (DW) article dated 27, February 2023 reported that shouts of “Viva Mexico!” and “Lopez out!” filled the city square in the capital against Lopez Obrador, President of Mexico.

When searching with the keywords ‘Lopez out Mexico’ on Twitter, we found the viral video tweeted on 27, February 2023 by an account named ‘F.M News’ with the caption:  “OUT, LÓPEZ!” “OUT, LÓPEZ!” Thousands of Mexicans shouted today in the Zócalo of Mexico City, in a massive demonstration in defense of the INE, democracy, and against the ‘Plan B’ of López Obrador’s electoral reform.

The same video is also found tweeted on 27, February 2023 on Rod Perez’s Twitter page mentioning it as “Get Out López!! shouted more than 300,000 people outside the National Palace in #Mexico City and 80 other cities, to demand that the President not get his hands on the electoral process for 2024”.

Conclusion

It is found that a video from a recent protest in Mexico against electoral reforms is falsely shared as Imran Khan’s supporters in Pakistan.
