Sharia law is a set of rules based on Islamic teachings that guide how Muslims should live, covering things like morality, family matters, and finances. It varies in practice among countries with Muslim-majority populations.
The Taliban strongly controlled Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001, making strict and harsh Sharia rules. They treated women badly, and they often used severe punishments openly to make people scared.
Meanwhile, a 1 minute, 59 second viral video is purporting on X (formerly Twitter) that a woman is being punished according to sharia law for wearing trousers. In this viral video, we can see a burqa-clad woman lying on the road, and we can see one man holding her legs, another man holding her head, and a third man with a beard and wearing a turban beating a woman with leather straps on her buttocks. The woman is crying and begging them to stop beating.

What is the truth?
We ran a reverse search image using the keyframes of the viral video, and we found a similar one posted on documentingreality website with the description that Reuters covered about this incident on April 3, 2009, with the title ‘Pakistani Taliban flog girl accused of having affair’.
According to Reuters, a video of a 17-year-old girl who was beaten by Taliban assistants is from Pakistan for having an affair. Reuters reported that this incident took place in the Swat Valley, some 140 kilometers northwest of Islamabad.
The Taliban confirmed this incident, a spokesperson for the Taliban said the beating was against the Sharia law.
It clarifies that the girl was not beaten for wearing trousers, but she was beaten for having an affair. It is falsely shared by social media users and right-wing supporters.
The girl was not punished for wearing trousers as claimed, but for having an affair.
