Explanation

A video clip where Rahul Gandhi’s speech is compared with Modi’s is viral on social media. Rahul Gandhi is seen saying in Hindi “If you want to talk to the people of the rest of the world, be it the people of America, the people of Japan, or the people of England, then Hindi will not work there. Only English will work.”

This video clip of Rahul Gandhi speaking about the importance of the English language over Hindi is compared with the speech of Modi in Hindi at the United Nations General Assembly. This video is being shared on Twitter with the claim that Rahul Gandhi raised a question on the Hindi language in India where Modi increases the honour of the country by speaking in Hindi at the UN. Posts with such a claim can be seen here, here, and here.

What is the truth?

When searching for the complete video of both of their speech, a video from the Indian National Congress Youtube channel titled “Rahul Gandhi Full Speech | राहुल गांधी भाषण | Bharat Jodo Yatra | Rajasthan | Alwar | Rahul Gandhi” dated 19, December 2022 is found with Rahul Gandhi’s full speech.

It is found at 9.35 minutes from the video that he said “I am not saying don’t read Hindi. Tamil should be read, Hindi should be read, Marathi should be read, and all the languages of India should be read. If you want to talk to the people of the rest of the world, be it the people of America, the people of Japan, or the people of England, then Hindi will not work there. Only English will work.” He also mentions that kids of all MPs including Amit Shah, MLAs, and Chief Ministers go to English medium schools but preaches that no one should speak English. A full video of the meeting is published on the ‘Rahul Gandhi’ Youtube channel and can be seen here.

Modi’s speech is found on Narendra Modi’s Youtube channel with the title ‘PM Modi’s address to the United Nations General Assembly (Hindi Version)’ published on 25, September 2021. The same video with translated speech is found on the BBC Hindi Youtube channel with the title ‘PM Modi UNGA Speech’.

Conclusion

It is found that Rahul Gandhi’s speech is clipped appropriately and is shared with missing context. He did not ask not to read Hindi or any other languages but insisted to learn English to compete with people across the world.
