Explanation

Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra reaches Gujrat, and it will pass through seven Gujarat districts: Dahod, Panchmahal, Chhota Udepur, Bharuch, Tapi, Surat, and Navsari. It will finish in Mumbai on March 17 with a big rally. Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge is inviting leaders from the India bloc to attend the event, and the press conference will be held in New Delhi.

Meanwhile, a viral video was shared by BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala. In the shared viral video of Rahul Gandhi, he was giving a speech and talking to people who attended his rally, the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. During that time, we can hear him saying, “you guys don’t even know how much GST you guys are paying, so taking the caste census, we will get to know about this properly, and it’s revolutionary work, so please start doing it.”

Poonwala shared this video and claimed that Rahul said that by taking the caste census, you will get to know how much GST you paid. “The caste census is for finding GST. When will the media call this joker out?”, he added.

What is the Truth?

We ran a reverse search using the keyframes of the viral video, and we found the full original video on the official YouTube channel of the Indian National Congress (INC), posted on March 10, 2024.

From the timestamp 15:53, Rahul Gandhi said, “First, we have to do two things. The first work is the caste census. From taking this census on every citizen of this country, we get to know how many backwards, economically weaker general category people, and adivasis there are. Everything we get to know, and then the next step is an economic survey, and while doing this, you can get to know that from India’s money, our society is getting this much. In India’s institutions, even if it’s a bureaucracy, army, judiciary, or even the media, people will get to know that my kind of person is in the media. In the biggest 200 companies, how much backward class, dalit, and adivasis are there? We will know accurately… Guys will really know very clearly then.”

“After this, you can ask for your rights; today,.. you can’t ask for your rights because you don’t have data. You don’t know..because I asked you how many dalit, adivasis there are, you don’t know..how many people represent in media, you don’t know.

In the overall Indian high court, there are 650 judges, and how many belong to the Adivasis community? You guys don’t have any idea about it because the government doesn’t want to reveal it. Adani is not going to tell you, but I will tell you that in India, 22 persons have equivalent money, as much as 70 crores of Indian citizens have, which is exactly 50% of the population. If we separate one side with 70 crores and the other with 22 people with equivalent money, how many people have 70 crores?

On the one hand, there are farmers, labourers, and unemployed youth, and on the other side, there are 22 people. Who’s loans are waived off? .. For these 22 people only… 16 lakh crores of loans are waived off for these 22 people only. Fasal bima yojana money is also waived for these people only. If the public sector is also turned into the private sector for that, they only get money, so taking the caste census and economic survey will give an idea that these 22 people are responsible”, he said.

Then Rahul Gandhi gave an example. He asked a man sitting next to him, “How much GST you gave for this green t-shirt?…how much you gave.. exactly the same amount of GST is given by Gautam Adani, and how much you earn and how much Gautam Adani earn is not the same. Adani is a billionaire, and you are just a farmer, so is it inequality? and you guys don’t know how much GST you guys are paying for this. So by taking the caste census, you will get a clear idea.”

Rahul Gandhi’s last few lines from his speech are taken and shared in different contexts to mock him, but he actually explained about caste inequality and economic inequality.

Conclusion

Rahul Gandhi’s statement is shared in a different context, and it is baseless and shared in a false narrative.
