An image of a woman and a man sitting on a bench with the woman seen writing on paper with a pen was uploaded by a user. This picture has gained widespread popularity. In the picture, two men are also visible. A man in a green robe can be seen standing behind them, and a Christian priest is standing in front of them. The faces of the people in the picture are blurry with no clarity in it. This infographic poster is accompanied by a caption “A young couple is getting their marriage registered in a Delhi Church. Their son is busy teaching Indians.”

This post has garnered around 99k views as of now while we were writing this article. The man and woman in the photo are claimed as Rajiv and Sonia getting married in a Christian ceremony by the people who are sharing the image. You can view related posts with similar claims from previous years here, here, and here.

What’s the truth?

We began analyzing the viral image using a basic Google reverse image process, but we were unable to locate any images that matched the widely circulated image. Next, we used Google to search for pertinent keywords like “Rajiv and Sonia wedding,” “Rajiv wedding photos,” and many more. This led us to many articles and videos.

We got this 1-minute 45-second video from a YouTube channel namely, ‘British Movietone’ with the title WEDDING OF RAJIV and SONIA – NO SOUND.” In the video, Rajiv and Sonia are shown exchanging garlands during a Hindu ritual. It’s also noticeable that Sonia has flowers on her head and is dressed in a saree with a bindi on her forehead. Numerous relatives of the bride and groom are present. They can be seen posing for pictures, cutting a large cake, and signing some documents in the video. This video was uploaded in July 2015.

As we dug deeper into our investigation, we discovered a Times picture gallery commemorating the 77th anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi’s birth, featuring 25 images capturing significant occasions in his life. The very first image shows “Indira Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia’s mother Paola Maino pose for The Times of India moments after Rajiv and Sonia tied the knot in New Delhi on February 25, 1968.”

Additionally, we obtained a separate photo of them both smiling for the camera during their wedding. Both Rajiv and Sonia are seen in this picture with bindis or tikkas applied to their foreheads and garlands around their necks. The Hindu marriage tradition observes all of these traditions. This makes it clear that they followed Hindu tradition when getting married.

There was another image where Rajiv Gandhi was seen signing the marriage documents surrounded by Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit (sitting), Indira Gandhi, Sanjay Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, and others looking on.

The aforementioned details make it clear that the picture circulating doesn’t actually depict Rajiv and Sonia getting married in a Christian ceremony and is instead fake. It also verifies that their wedding was Hindu style, not Christian, as the circulating rumors purport.

Therefore, we conclude that the purported picture of Rajiv and Sonia getting married in a Christian ceremony is untrue. There are a tonne of pictures that show them married in the Hindu tradition and with their entire family.
