Explanation

A violent mob stormed Nankana Sahib police station in Pakistan, brought out an accused arrested with blasphemy charges, attacked him, stripped him naked, dragged him by legs, and lynched him to death brutally by setting him on fire. This video on social media is viral. Some of the social media users share the video claiming that the man accused of blasphemy and lynched to death belongs to Christianity, a minor community in Pakistan. Some of the posts can be seen here, here, and here.

What is the truth?

When searching with keywords it is found that the man killed brutally by the public on Blasphemy issue is not a Christian. Reuters article dated 11, February reported the incident and identified the person killed as Muhammad Waris. Other articles such as The Guardian and Dawn also mentioned the same in their articles.

Further, The Guardian article identified the person killed as a Muslim. The article mentioned, “A mob in eastern Pakistan stormed a police station on Saturday, snatched a Muslim man accused of blasphemy from custody and lynched him, in the country’s latest religion-linked killing.”

The Dawn article reported that according to the RPO, the victim was acquitted by a court in a blasphemy case in June 2022 and he was again accused of “desecrating the Holy Quran”. He said the wife of the victim had separated after filing a divorce case and the victim was involved in alleged witchcraft by “placing his wife’s pictures in the Holy Quran”.

BBC Urdu article mentions Nooran Bibi and Isa as Muhammed Waris’s parents.

Conclusion

It is found that the person accused of blasphemy charges and lynched to death by a violent mob in Pakistan is not Christian but Muslim.
