It should be noted that Shah Rukh Khan had talked about growing intolerance in India in 2015 and 2016 on various occasions and he went even as much as saying we will descend into dark ages if there is growing intolerance in the country, which was not well received by the supporters of right-wing and the BJP which had just come back to power in 2014.
What’s the truth ?
When searching the keywords from the viral clip, we were able to find out that the video was uploaded 12 years ago on Zoom’s YouTube channel. The video was uploaded on 19th February 2010 with the title “Shah Rukh, a proud Muslim & Indian.”
In the video, the interviewer asked Shah Rukh Khan if his religion has led him to a situation where he was discriminated. Shah Rukh Khan replied, “In spite of my religion, I have been accepted all over the world. Especially in my country, which wrongly people feel is a…(pause), I think people seem to say that Islam is a minority and I think that’s quite an ironic statement to make. Because I have never been made to feel like that. I have been made to feel very special because of my religion here.”
Shah Rukh then says, “I’m very proud to be a Muslim. I’m very proud to be of this religion. I’m very proud to be an Indian.”
In the video which is about 3 minutes long, Shah Rukh Khan then goes on about his experience at Newark Airport where he was detained. While talking about his experience at the US Airport, he mentioned that the people at the immigration were Indians and Pakistanis. It is at this point (1 minute 36 seconds) where Shah Rukh can be heard saying the word ‘Pakistanis’, apart from which there is no such mention. The word is cut out from here and pasted in the beginning part where he said “I’m very proud to be an Indian” to make it look like the actor said, “I’m proud to be a Pakistani.”
Conclusion
This viral video where Shah Rukh Khan is heard saying that he is a proud Pakistani is edited and manipulated. Shah Rukh Khan did not say that he was a proud Pakistani.
