Ahmedabad Mirror reported that rumours spread initially in Surat’s Varachha area that an unidentified diamond trader had dropped a pack of diamonds worth crores. After this, locals gathered and started searching for the diamonds on the road.

Some even collected diamonds from the road. However, the Economics Times reported that they were not CVD diamonds but rather diamonds typically used in embroidery work. The same is also reported by India Today.

A trader told TOI: “The incident took place at 9am when the market was about to start for the day. People gathered all over the road from Khodiyarnagar to Mini Bazaar in Varachha. Some traders also reached there to check if the diamonds were real or fake. However, they turned out to be fake diamonds. Actually, they were plastic diamonds used in embroidery or imitation jewellery.”

The article further states that there were also rumours in the market that the demand for diamonds were dropped in the market as the rates of CVD diamonds had reduced in the past few days.
