Explanation

The fifth batch of nominees was revealed by the BJP on March 24, 2024. Bollywood star Kangana Ranaut is announced as the candidate from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, who will run for the Lok Sabha in her first election.

Actress Kangana Ranaut recently talked about how the Women’s Reservation Bill helped her get the BJP ticket during a public speech in Mandi’s Balh village. “I’m here on this platform today because of the Women’s Reservation Bill, which gives women a 30% reservation in the Lok Sabha. Your daughter from Mandi has reached this stage as a result.” One similar claim post can be seen here.

What’s the truth?

We started our analysis with keywords on Google related to the women’s reservation bill and found the Hindu article related to that. The article was titled “Women’s Reservation Bill will be implemented only after 2029: Amit Shah” and was posted on September 20, 2023.

According to the article, “Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that irrespective of the Opposition’s support, the women’s reservation Bill will be implemented only after 2029. He also added that the Census work and delimitation will be done only after the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.”

The article went on to add that, the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, also known as the 128th Constitutional Amendment Bill, 2023, states that a delimitation exercise based on data from the first Census, which is carried out after the Act is enacted, will be conducted before the reservation of one-third of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies takes effect. On September 20, 2023, the bill was passed by the Lok Sabha.

The delimitation process and the census will take place right after the general election, Mr. Shah stated in the Lok Sabha. He did not, however, provide a date for the postponed Census, which has been unclear since 2021 even though the equipment is prepared.

When we read the document of the bill passed by the Lok Sabha it also says the same.

Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, spoke about this topic in the Lok Sabha. The official YouTube channel of Parliament, Sansad TV, has the whole discussion video can be seen here. He discusses the reservation at about the 31-minute mark in the entire video.

All of this information reaffirms and makes clear that the bill won’t take effect until the delimitation and census process is finished; as of right now, appropriate dates have not been determined.

Conclusion:

Therefore, actor Kangana Ranaut’s claim that the Women’s Reservation Bill gave her a ticket to run in the election from the Himachal Pradesh constituency of Mandi is incorrect. In reality, the bill has been passed but is yet to be implemented.
