The so-called farmers making unrealistic demands from the GoI seem fully prepared as if gearing up for a war against the state. These purportedly poor farmers can afford to modify their tractors but also demand pensions and other stuff from the GoI. This protest against the Modi government is politically motivated.

Explanation

The Union BJP government in September 2020 arbitrarily enacted three agriculture bills without consulting Parliament or farmers. Thousands of farmers marched towards Delhi protesting that these laws were against farmers and in favor of corporate companies. Subsequently, the Union Government withdrew the Acts.

At that time some promises were made by the government like a guarantee of minimum support price, and withdrawal of cases filed against farmers during the protest. Since it’s not fulfilled, the farmers are again marching towards Delhi and protesting now. To prevent them, the government and the police have engaged in many activities such as erecting barbed wire fences and throwing tear gas shells on the path of the farmers.

In this instance, the BJP is spreading numerous videos on social media showing farmers using their tractors to run down a police officer, a woman yelling while standing in the middle of the road, and someone altering with a tractor. What’s the truth?

Fact-Check 1

Using viral video keyframes and keywords, we conducted an online search. This led us to a piece of news about this video that was published on the “Times Now” website on August 21, 2023.

Farmers are planning to protest at the Badbar toll plaza near Sangrur in Punjab to provide relief to the flood-affected farmers. When the police tried to stop them, the protesters quickly turned on the tractor to bypass it.

During this time, a farmer was hit by a tractor and got seriously injured. He was rescued and admitted to the hospital but died without treatment. It is also stated in the report that a police officer was also injured in the incident and fortunately escaped alive.

The same information has also been published on the ‘India Today’ website. Sangrur Police also posted a viral video on their X site on August 21, 2023. They also mentioned that the deceased was a farmer.

From these, it can be confirmed that the video that has been circulated is not related to the farmers’ protest currently moving towards Delhi and the deceased is not a police officer but a farmer.

Fact-Check 2

In another video we see an old woman standing in the middle of the road and shouting. This post is shared with a claim stating, “Common citizens of Punjab are fed up with the daily protests taking place in the state. Watch how a harrowed elderly woman is cursing the farmers, saying that “the Center is giving you everything for free, yet you are harassing the public & blocking roads.”

We used the video’s keyframes to conduct a reverse image search on Google. This took us to a post published on the Facebook page ‘Focus Punjab Te’ on November 5, 2022, regarding this video. From this, it can be noted that the video that is going viral has nothing to do with the current march of farmers towards Delhi.

Fact-Check 3

A man is seen transforming the red tractor in the 13-second viral video. The assertion that “the so-called farmers making unrealistic demands from the Government seem fully prepared as if gearing up for a war against the state” is shared with this post.

Our analysis of the viral video using the keyframes directed us to a video on Instagram. Here, we have translated the Turkish original into English, meaning “Original video and owner is me.”

This explains that the video is not from India and has nothing to do with the recent farmer’s protests that are taking place in Delhi.

Everything above implies that the viral clips mentioned above are not connected to the recent protests by farmers.

Conclusion:

According to our search, the widely circulated rumor that a police officer was killed during a farmers’ protest by a tractor is untrue. The Punjabi farmers’ strike took place in August of 2023. The accident claimed the farmer’s life.

In a similar vein, it is well known that the video that is making the rounds, in which an old lady lamented the traffic jams brought on by demonstrators, was shot in 2022.

Furthermore, the third assertion—in which we witness a man modifying a red tractor—is not from India, albeit the original video displays a Turkish caption on it.
