India will hold seven rounds of general elections between April 19, 2024, and June 1, 2024. On June 4, 2024, the results will be made public after the vote-counting process. The first three stages of the Lok Sabha elections are already over. The two major parties run aggressive campaigns for the ongoing election phase.

Here, a 10-second film of an impressive crowd is shown. Furthermore visible to us is Akhilesh Yadav, the president of the Samajwadi Party, standing atop a vehicle. He is speaking to the assembly while holding a microphone, and we can see a lot of objects being thrown in his direction. This post is shared with a claim stating, “The love was showered on Akhilesh Yadav during his campaign in Kanauj, UP. Looks like all 80 seats will be bagged by YOGIji.” You can view similar claim posts here and here.

What’s the truth?

Using the keyframes from the viral video, we conducted a pertinent Google keyword search to begin our study. This directed us to the original video, which was posted on May 2, 2024, to Instagram by Vikashyadavauraiyawale. An infographic labeled “Live from Kanauj” is included with this video. We looked into the footage and found no mention of slippers being thrown on the President.

We took this as a cue and searched further and came across a tweet by News24 on May 10, 2024.  This post also carried the same viral clip with an infographic stating, “Akhilesh Yadav welcomed with flower garlands.” Also, the post is captioned as “SP President Akhilesh Yadav welcomed with flower garlands.”

Moreover, when we examined the video closely, we didn’t see any slippers thrown as the viral claim suggests rather it was flower garlands as mentioned by News24.

Furthermore, the media would have covered and featured the viral video all over their broadcasts and articles if it had been slippers. However, we were unable to locate any news on Akhilesh Yadav, the president of the Samajwadi Party, being thrown slippers.

We conclude that the widely shared video, which purports to show Akhilesh Yadav being doused with slippers while running for office in Kanauj, Uttar Pradesh, is incorrect and misleading. The objects hurled at the rally are actually garlands.
