In the widely circulated 28-second video, an elderly common man is being beaten by a policeman. Several people are watching this scenario unfold on a train platform, yet nobody is bothering them. It is seen that the police thrash, kick, and drag him by his legs. Finally, we watch the policeman raising the man’s legs and making him shudder to hang him from the railway track.

What’s the truth?
We began our study by looking up pertinent keywords and viral video keyframes. This directed us to the IBC24 YouTube channel, which is a well-known Hindi news outlet in the states of Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. On July 29, 2022, this same popular video was uploaded here with the following caption, “Policeman brutally beats an old man at Jabalpur Railway Station and also hung him on the railway track.” This indicates that the event took place in Madhya Pradesh and is quite old.
Using this as a clue, we conducted additional research and discovered the identical video that CNN-News18 posted to their YouTube channel on July 29, 2022. This was titled “Constable Caught On Camera Thrashing An Old Man In M.P’s Jabalpur Suspended.” When we looked into the description box it read “A police official from Rewa said that the police constable involved in the brutal thrashing of an old man at Jabalpur Railway Station has been suspended. The issue came to light after a video of the policeman beating an old man mercilessly and dragging him went viral on social media. The police constable was identified as Anant Sharma and the victim’s name is Gopal Prasad.”
After stepping up our search, we discovered a snapshot of the July 2022 viral video in a story published by India Today. You may read the article here. Additionally, on July 30, 2022, the Indian Express covered the same event.
As per the report, following the viral video of a 20-year-old constable dragging and beating an elderly man at the Jabalpur railway station, the GRP charged the guy with assault and criminal intimidation. The Madhya Pradesh Police suspended the constable, who was assigned to the Lour police station in Rewa. Also, the police claimed that the old vagrant, named Gopal Prasad, spat insults at the cop while intoxicated.
All of this data confirms that contrary to what the viral claim implies, the video is from Madhya Pradesh, not Uttar Pradesh.
