Explanation

A press conference is being attended by a few men in the two-minute, twenty-second viral video. We also observe that “Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh” is written on the banner behind them. The organization’s president, Janardan Moon, is heard in the middle of the video saying that they have chosen to support the I.N.D.I.A coalition in the Lok Sabha elections to oppose the BJP.

This post is shared with a claim stating, “Big News. Please make this viral. RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) supported the INDIA alliance across the country and appealed to Sanghis across the country to vote in favor of the INDIA alliance. Sangh shouted, overthrow Modi government.” You can view related posts with similar views here, here, here, here, and here.

What’s the truth?

We started our analysis with the viral keyframes of the video, which led us to the original video uploaded on YouTube. On March 24, 2024, this video was uploaded with the caption, “Nagpur: RSS supported Congress, created uproar across the country PC of RSS Chief Janardan Moon, Abdul Pasha.”

When we looked into the description box written in Hindi, we translated it to read as “For those who are wondering how “RSS” supported the INDIA alliance, let us tell you that there are two RSSs in the country, one is ONLINE REGISTERD which has supported Congress, and the other is UNREGISTERD whose Sarsanghchatak is Mohan Bhagwat. Please be careful not to get confused. Nagpur 1 RSS given unconditional support to INDIA Alliance”

Their explanation made it crystal clear that this is not the RSS led by Mohan Bhagwat.

Additionally, we conducted a Google search using the terms “RSS Congress,” “Janardan Moon RSS,” and “Nagpur RSS.” We found several articles published by different news sources due to our searches.

According to the 2017 report in Times Of India, social worker Janardan Moon lodges a complaint against lawyer Gundalwar for threatening him for the registration of his organization ‘Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh(RSS).’

We took that as a cue and searched further and got another article from Nagpur Today dated December 2021. The article was titled “RSS VS RSS Charity Commissioner quashes plea objecting  registration of Janardan Moon’s RSS.”

When we read the article we understood that, Moon’s attempt to establish a “Secular” Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sang (RSS) has been significantly thwarted as the Charity Commissioner’s office has recently dismissed a plea requesting an objection to the organization’s registration.

The article continued by saying that since the RSS, established in 1925, is not registered with this authority, the Office of Charity has noted that this authority is powerless to consider the current application that challenges the registration of Moon’s RSS.

We have also attached comparison images of both the RSS flags for the reader’s reference below.

All of this information makes it clear that the RSS members who are seen endorsing Congress in the widely shared video are not the same RSS members who support Mohan Bhagwat.

Conclusion:

To sum up, the viral claim stating that RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) supported the INDIA alliance is false and misleading. In reality, the RSS shown in the viral video differs from the RSS led by Mohan Bhagwat.
