What’s the truth?

We conducted a pertinent keyword search to begin our investigation, such as “Sadhus beaten by people.” In addition, we performed a basic Google reverse image search algorithm using the viral keyframes. This directed us to a story published by India.com.

The article is captioned “Sadhus From UP, En Route To Gangasagar Mela, Assaulted In Bengal, BJP Targets Mamata For ‘Palghar-Like Lynching” and posted on January 13, 2024. The viral video’s screengrab was also included in this piece.

According to the article, “Reportedly, three teenage girls, whom the sadhus had asked about the route, screamed and ran away, prompting locals to apprehend and manhandle the sadhus.”

Also, the article went on to add that, while traveling to the Gangasagar Mela, a mob in the Purulia area of West Bengal ambushed three sadhus. The sadhus and his two sons had rented a car to go to Gangasagar to celebrate Makar Sankranti. The event happened because the people in the area thought the sadhus were kidnappers. The mob took the law into their own hands and violently attacked the defenseless sadhus without first confirming the facts.

Using this as a hint, we conducted additional research and discovered two tweets posted on January 13, 2024, by the Purulia Police. The police first denied the allegations, claiming that the Sadhus and the local girls misunderstood one another because of language issues. Later that day, they emphasized via another tweet that there was no communal component to the event.

As per the tweet, “Facts about a recent incident in Purulia are being misrepresented from certain quarters. On 11.01.24 afternoon, there was a misunderstanding between three Gangasagar-bound sadhus with three local minor girls near Kashipur over a language problem. The girls got scared and local people manhandled the sadhus and damaged their vehicle, alleging a kidnapping attempt. Local police promptly intervened and rescued the sadhus. 12 people have been arrested over the incident based on a specific case. All possible assistance was rendered to the sadhus.

There is no communal overtone whatsoever regarding the incident. Anyone trying to fuel communal passions will be strictly dealt with as per law.”

The same incident was also covered by India Today; you can read their article here.

The material presented above makes it clear that the widely circulated rumor that the Sadhus raped Hindu girls and were thereafter attacked by the general public is untrue.

Conclusion:

As a result, we conclude that the widely shared video purporting to depict Sadhus getting beaten by the mob while trying to flee after raping Hindu girls is false and misleading.

In actuality, the crowd attacks the Sadhus because they are misunderstood to be kidnappers because of linguistic difficulties.
