Explanation

The government-appointed Law Commission has sought public opinion on creating a Uniform Civil Code (UCC). A Uniform Civil Code (UCC) refers to a common set of laws that are applicable to all citizens and is not based on religion in dealing with marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption among other personal matters. It was suggested earlier but was not implemented so far.

Meanwhile, a contact number ‘9090902024’ is being shared by right-wing supporters asking Hindus to give missed call to the said number to express their support to UCC. Some of the posts with such a claim can be seen here, here and here.

What is the truth?

When searching with the number mentioned, we found that the mobile number is related to a missed call campaign launched by the BJP ahead of the 2024 elections. India Today article dated 31, May 2023 reported that a unique missed call campaign was launched by BJP to expand the party’s support base and is reminiscent of the membership drive conducted by the party in 2019. The number holds a significant symbolism, representing the nine years of the Modi government and the crucial election year of 2024. It also aims to secure a strong mandate in the upcoming 2024 general election.

A tweet dated 29, June 2023 by the BJP Twitter page reads “9 years… Service, good governance and poor welfare! Give a missed call on 9090902024 to join the ‘Jan Sampark se Jan Samarthan’ campaign.” Therefore, the number in circulation is found to be introduced by BJP for its missed call campaign and is not related to the uniform civil code.

The Law of Commission issued a disclaimer on July 7 to inform the public regarding certain WhatsApp texts, calls, and messages being circulated pertaining to the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). It further mentions that certain phone numbers are rotating among the individuals, falsely associating them with the Law Commission of India. “It is clarified that the Law Commission has no involvement or connection with these texts, calls, or messages, and disclaims any responsibility or endorsement thereof”, states the disclaimer.

A public notice by the Law Commission dated June 14 announced a way for the public to express their views on UCC. The users were asked to submit their views in the next 30 days (till July 14) by sending an email to membersecretary-lci@gov.in.

Conclusion

It is found that a mobile number used in BJP’s missed call campaign is falsely shared in the name of Uniform Civil Code.
