Explanation

A video clip of a flyover collapse showing cars crushed under the bridge is shared widely mentioning that it is a gift from Arvind Kejriwal to the public after his victory in Delhi Municipal Elections. The incident is claimed as a collapse of under construction metro pillar in Najafgarh. The posts are shared in the context to mention Arvind Kejriwal’s government is a corrupt one and questions if any action would be taken. Posts with such a claim can be seen here, here, and here.

The same video is also shared mentioning that it happened recently in Thane.

What is the truth?

When reverse-searching the keyframes of the viral video we found that the video is old and is not from Delhi or Thane. A News 18 article dated 16, May 2018 titled ‘Varanasi Flyover Disaster Poses Question Mark on UP Bridge Corporation’ is found carrying matching visuals from the viral video. The article mentions that at least 18 people were killed after the flyover collapse as it crushed a mini bus, cars, and two-wheelers.

With further search, an NDTV article is found reporting that around 15 people were killed and 11 injured in the collapse of an under-construction flyover in Varanasi. It is also mentioned that several officials of the UP bridge construction were booked and the state government suspended two managers and two engineers.

The video was earlier shared in the name of multiple locations including Hyderabad. Cyberabad Police clarified by replying to one of the tweets by a Twitter user in 2021. A screenshot of the TOI article carrying matching visuals from the viral video can be seen attached in the tweet mentioning as Varanasi flyover collapse.

ABP News Youtube channel covered this incident and uploaded a video on 15, May 2018 with the title ‘Varanasi Bridge Collapse: NDRF team on spot to carry rescue operation’. The description part mentions that a portion of an under-construction flyover collapsed near the Cantt railway station in Varanasi’s cantonment area.

Conclusion

It is found that an old video from 2018 after the collapse of an under-construction flyover in Varanasi is falsely shared as a recent visual from Delhi and Thane.
