The internet is overflowing with numerous videos and statements from both parties as the Lok Sabha elections approach.

In this instance, a man is heard speaking into a microphone in a 1-minute, 48-second video. He is heard stating that 11 lakh votes were cast in the 2019 election, according to Modi in Varanasi. However, the EVM counted 12,877,000 votes. He continued, asking how this could be. and declared, “The EVM gives votes; the hen does not give eggs.” Similar claim posts can be seen here and here.

What’s the truth?

We started our analysis with a relevant keyword search on Google which led us to a tweet from the Election Commission of India. They replied in three parts along with the false claim and adding reality.

According to the post, “False Claim 1: the false claim is made in a video regarding mismatch of electors & votes polled in EVM in Varanasi PC during GE2019.”

They went on to add the reality that the “claim is misleading & fake. Total Electors in Varanasi PC were 18,56,791. Total votes polled & counted in EVM-10,58,744 & postal votes-2085”

Likewise, they added the second “False Claim 2: A false claim is being made quoting ECI letter that mismatch between total electors & votes polled in EVM was found in 373 PCs in GE2019.” Here, the “Reality: the claim is misleading, fake & baseless. There is no such communication issued by ECI. There was no mismatch.”

Finally, they also included the election results statistical report website link for more clarification.

We took that as a cue and researched the website and found out the results of the Varanasi which properly matched with the numbers given by the election commission of India. Also, we have attached the file for the reader’s reference below.

Therefore, the election commission’s information has made it clear that the widely circulated claim is fake and misleading.

We thus conclude that the widely circulated claim that the 11, lakh votes cast in the 2019 Varanasi election are tallied as 12, 87000 votes in the electronic voting machine is fraudulent and deceptive. The Indian Election Commission has clarified this through a tweet of its own.
