Explanation

In the 29-second viral clip, we were able to see a group of 4 to 5 boys kicking, using a stick to beat a girl wearing hijab inside a classroom. The girl is seen crying and sobbing hiding her face under the desk. The boys don’t look sorry rather they are happy with all smiles on their faces.

This video is shared with a claim stating that the Hindu boys are behaving like this to a Muslim girl in India. The user went on to add that education is important but not in this type of college. The same post with similar claims can be seen here and here. Come, let’s check the authenticity of this viral claim.

What’s the truth?

When reverse searching the keyframes of the viral video and further searching with relevant keywords we found an article published by an Indonesian news outlet namely ‘Tribunjabar.id.’ The article was published on 13 February 2020 and titled “Current Condition of Middle School Student Victim of Bullying in Purworejo, She Was Hit and Kicked by 3 Students in Class.”  This proves that the video is old and from Indonesia, not India as claimed in the viral posts.

According to the article, the Governor of Central Java, Ganjar Pranowo, said that he had asked the Head of the Central Java Provincial Government Service to come to Purworejo and meet the victim’s parents. Moreover, “the victim (in condition) was traumatized,” said Ganjar, quoted by TribunJabar.id from Kompas TV, Thursday (13/2/2020).

He further said that the student’s parents turned out to be workers. They were then given compensation by the Central Java Provincial Government. The victim’s parents were also asked not to work so they could care for the female student who suffered the bullying.

Likewise, we also got an article from ‘Liramedia’ published on 14, February 2020 regarding the same incident from Indonesia. According to that article, atleast eight people have been questioned, consisting of five witnesses and three suspects. As this case involved a minor, social services and guardians would accompany the victim and perpetrator.

The victim, who is a student with special needs, was previously abused by 3 students by hitting her with their hands, hitting her with a broom, kicking her, and insulting her.

The three suspects were charged under Article 80 of the child protection law with a penalty of 3.5 years.

Thus, it clearly proves that the above incident happened in Indonesia in 2020. The viral clip is an old video and not from India.

Conclusion:

Therefore, we conclude with our available evidence that the perpetrators from the above video are punished and are not from India as claimed in the viral post. Moreover, it’s an old incident from Indonesia shared with false accusations.
