Explanation

Delhi Government led by Arvind Kejriwal and his Aam Aadmi Party had imposed a ban on crackers ahead of Diwali. This move was criticized by the Bharatiya Janata Party as being “anti-Hindu”. Despite the ban, people in Delhi celebrated Diwali with crackers and many in social media shared videos of people bursting crackers in Delhi. This particular video was shared by many. See here and here.

What’s the truth?

When we took keyframes of the video and reverse searched it, we found that the video is from January 2022 and it was taken in Italy, not India. This is the video published on YouTube on 2nd January 2022.

Below is the comparison between the original video and the virally shared video which are identical.

The video of the firecrackers in Italy was first published on a twitter account with a username @niporwifi and the video had garnered over 7 million views so far.

As per the claims from the tweets from January 2022, the Mayor of Naples had imposed a ban on firecrackers/fireworks for the New Year and people defied the ban to celebrate New Year. Interestingly, this video is shared as Diwali Celebrations in Delhi despite the ban to make it appear as if similar defiance took place in Delhi as well.

Conclusion

A video taken in Italy is being shared to mislead that it was taken in Delhi during the Diwali celebrations despite the ban in Delhi to burst crackers.
