CCTV footage showing a man chasing a woman and attacking her on a road followed by the public trying to catch him and save her is circulated on Twitter. This video is shared to claim that the assailant seen in the video is a ‘jihadi’.

Another user tweeted the video with the caption roughly translated as “Forced Love :- Jihadir in Pune attacked a girl in unrequited love, Tried to kill him but the people present there intervened and caught the boy and saved the girl. Hats off to the people of Pune for their efforts!” These tweets have gained more views and retweets.
What is the truth?
When watching the video closely we found the date mentioned as 27, June 2023 in the footage. When searching for the news reports related to the viral video with relevant keywords we found Jargan’s article carrying matching visuals from the viral video.
The article reported that a man armed with a machete attacked a 19-year-old college student in Pune’s Sadashiv Peth area. And the locals nearby intervened and saved the girl. They also caught the accused and handed him over to the police. Both the accused and victim are former classmates. The accused is identified as Shantanu Laxman Jadhav, 22 -years old.
A tweet dated 28, June 2023 by Pune Mirror reported “The Pune court on Wednesday granted four days of police custody to the 23-year-old youth who was arrested on Tuesday for attacking a girl student with a machete in the city. The accused Shantanu Laxman Jadhav (21) was produced before the court by police today.”

The Pune Mirror article further mentions that the victim is studying interior design at a private college in the city and was attacked by the accused after she refused his proposal due to his problematic behavior. It also states that two youths intervened and saved the girl and they also saved the accused from mob lynching as the crowd started attacking him, and handed him over to the police.
