Explanation

Zakir Naik is an Indian Islamic Preacher who is banned to preach in India. He faces charges of money laundering and hate speech in India. His television is banned in Bangladesh. He also has been denied entry by the UK and Canada.

A 45-second video clip is viral on social media claiming that Zakir Naik has converted four people at his first event at the FIFA world cup in Qatar. Social media posts with such claims can be seen here, here, here, and here. Some of the social media posts also claim 588 people accepted Islam right before the world cup started.

What is the truth?

FIFA world cup 2022 was kickstarted on 20, November 2022 in Qatar. Several photos and videos related to the events are seen on social media platforms. The images and videos of Zakir Naik’s arrival to Qatar went viral and draws flak.

The videos of the FIFA world cup also are being shared on social media. But the viral video of Zakir Naik is found missing in the gallery of the FIFA world cup opening ceremony.

When reverse searching the keyframes of the video, a tweet dated 27, May 2016 by ‘Jaber Alharmi’ posted the viral clip with the caption ‘4 people declare their conversion to Islam after a lecture by Dr. Zakir Naik in Katara’.

The official Twitter handle of Katara mentioned Zakir Naik’s event as ‘Does God Exist? a lecture by Dr.Zakir Naik, on 26 May 2016, at the Amphitheater #Katara Open invitation’ confirming that the video was captured on this occasion.

‘Al Jazeera’ Facebook page published on 26, May 2016 the conversation from the viral clip which was captured from another angle.

The ‘India Today’ article seem to have had a title related to this claim and deleted it later.
Title – ‘In Qatar to preach Islam, Zakir Naik converts 4 people at event | Watch’.
The URL of the article contains words like ‘Zakir Naik comverts 4 people to Islam Qatar FIFA event’. But the article doesn’t convey any information on him converting 4 people to Islam at the FIFA event in Qatar but just a summary on Qatar inviting him to FIFA event and about him. Now, this article is titled as ‘Qatar invites Zakir Naik to preach Islam amid FIFA World Cup’.

Conclusion

A video of Zakir Naik in the event ‘Does god exist?’ held in Katara, Qatar in 2016 is being shared as the recent clip from the FIFA world cup 2022.
